Climate divisions defined by NOAA (e.g. VT2).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration divides each state into between one and ten climate divisions (see this map). Though intended to reflect climatic similarities, they sometimes reflect political and economic considerations as well. We take the 1970-2000 average annual heating and cooling degree days for each climate division from the National Climatic Data Center's U.S. Climate Normals. Annual cooling degree days is the annual sum of each day's average temperature - 65, with negative numbers rounded to zero. Annual heating degree days is the annual sum of 65 - each day's average temperature, with negative numbers rounded to zero.
